JANET N. ZADINA, PHD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology, Tulane University School of Medicine. A former classroom teacher, Dr. Zadina won the Society of Neuroscience’s 2011 Science Educator Award for her work training educators in brain processes.

Must-Read For Any Teacher

Every teacher should read this book. It provides a good balance between scientific information about how the brain works and practical ideas for how to use this information to inform your teaching. At the beginning of this school year, I taught my students a lot of the brain principles it describes, and those lessons have served as touchstones ever since, i.e. "Remember that we have to 'fire it until we wire it'!" These lessons created a common understanding in my classroom about how learning happens and enabled the students (and I!) to discuss their successes and challenges more openly, since they correlated their ability to do something with experience and effort, rather than innate skill. This book confirmed a lot of what I was already doing and also inspired me to incorporate new strategies into my everyday teaching. My one complaint is that it doesn't offer a lot of practical ideas in the section on teaching writing. However, it is definitely worth the read!

I bought this book to expand my reading on change mgt for my degree, and I have found it very useful for me in terms of having good change story, and the usage of the academic references.
However, there are some redundancy and not all chapters are strong enough for a book like this.
Overall it is a useful book to read.

Genre-bending read that's surprisingly sweet

To be honest, although I’d read through the Blood Bond blurb and the guest post and playlist author Alicia Rayne shared several weeks back, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect when I picked up this book. After all, it combined paranormal/vampire elements with time travel from modern-day Las Vegas to Regency London, not to mention a heroine with her fair share of inner demons and the promise of a menage romance. I wasn’t sure what to expect. And when I first started reading, I didn’t think I liked it much. But it grew on me, and suddenly I was flying through pages.

There are three main characters in this story: Roxanne, a lounge singer who gets transported in time ton Regency England; Darren, the vampire earl who makes the magic that brings her there possible, and Phillip, the down-on-his-luck nobleman with the heart of gold who doesn’t want to be fascinated by her but is drawn to her all the same. When you first meet them, it seems very much like Darren is the dark devil on Roxanne’s shoulder, while Phillip is the rather judgmental angel. But very soon these three characters begin to change each other. And they very quickly come to need each other in the way puzzle pieces fit together to make a whole.

One thing that surprised me was, with everything that was going on, how much the author still invested in developing the relationships between the characters. It was a nice slide into love, punctuated by a few steamy scenes, rather than the frantic plunge I half expected, given that every time one problem was seemingly dealt with, another arose. I was a little disappointed that the story didn’t really delve into the nature of the blood bond it drew its title from, but I guess that’s more of a nit-picky issue.

The major one for me, which kept me from giving it a four-star rating, was the issue of verisimilitude. Sure, when you combine the paranormal with time travel, it’s bound to push the limits of believability in a reader, but one reason I felt like I didn’t quite believe the story was because, with the exception of Roxanne, the characters didn’t act or speak like they were in the time period we readers were supposedly being transported to. Darren and Phillip had distinctly modern American speech patterns and seemed a little too complacent with the magic of everything happening, and these off notes kept me from being truly immersed in the story.

Still, Blood Bond was a very fun read, and definitely a bit of a genre-bender. It’s not as racy as other menage books I’ve read, which is great if you’re either not really into threesomes or if you’re new to the genre. And while I would’ve liked to see a more Regency-ish read, the characters are solid enough to carry you through to the end.

I loved this book

I loved this book!! I found it be a little slow in the first couple of chapters, but then I couldn't put it down. Their story has a wide range of emotions, and concepts. I liked that it was a little quirky, and had a few twists to make it interesting. The characters were all very animated. I loved Roxanna's passion. She was very intoxicating. I would recommend this book to anyone that likes paranormal, time travel and vampires. I received this book from Reading Deals Review Club in exchange for an honest review.

Well worth reading!

I was given this book free in exchange for an honest review. When I first started reading the book I was unsure of how I felt about it, but the more I read the more I enjoyed it. The author takes a different approach to the vampire paranormal than I have read in the past. It had a little bit of everything from modern day to historical tales and problems that the characters were exposed to and had to deal with each in their own way.
First book that I have ready by this author and look forward to others.

About me- SSG Infantry with 9 years of service. It's time to get a better paying job that doesn't require me to EAT SUCK all the time SO... I used this study guide, crammed over a period of 3 days (i do not recommend this) and took the test just yesterday. I got a 68 which is the highest score of anyone i know of. The lowest score is 20, you need 40 to pass, and 50 is the mean score, 80 is the highest. So 68 is up there. The army does not release score averages/percentages, but the few guys i know have gotten between 50 and 60 (we are infantry and not all of us are the brightest i.e. knuckle dragging, club wielding, sloped forehead- you get the picture). This book made a pretty big impact- it is laid out just like the actual test. In fact i would say the practice test in the book is a little harder than the actual test (which is good). If you are short on time just take the practice tests. If you have to study one thing study the aviation portion. But just doing a run-through of the practice tests the day before the actual test really made an impact. That being said the actual test made me feel like an idiot (there were a few instances where i was shouting curses at the computer screen for asking me flight school level questions "your gonna teach me that in flight school you piece of %&*" That actually happened. The testing center was empty except for myself. I have the decency to contain myself around strangers/officers. I was tired and a baby kept me up all night (also not recommended but life choices like that are irreversible)). I was running on coffee (definitely recommended) but i was answering correctly enough to get a 68. This book is worth every penny. Now i don't need it so i'm gonna burn it in a trashcan to celebrate.

I am not very good at taking standardized tests, but I really want to branch aviation. I figured that before I bomb the SIFT exam and make a fool out of myself, I ought to look around to see if I can't get my hands on a SIFT study booklet. With all thankfulness, I found this book. This book outlines exactly what you need to know in order to be successful on the exam. I did some research before hand and reviewed what good scores look like for the SIFT. Max score is 80 and mean score is 50, so I figured that getting a 60 would be the most reasonable score I could achieve. To my disbelief, I SCORED A 77!!! I truly do owe it to this study guide for giving me the tools I need to be successful for this exam. I definitely recommend getting one for yourself.

Very helpful study guide. Must buy!

Bought this book with 5 days to study for the exam. Studied each section for about an hour maybe more then the day before the exam I went over the tough sections. Passed the test with a mid 50 score. This book was definitely helpful. I would recommend it for anyone worried about the structure of the test. Test questions in this book are very similar to those on the actual exam.

About the Author

Karen E. Stine, PhD, is a professor of Biology and former dean of the School of Sciences at Auburn University at Montgomery in Alabama, USA. She has also served as the director of the undergraduate toxicology program at Ashland University in Ohio. She earned her PhD in toxicology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Stine is a member of the Society of Toxicology and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. At Clemson University, Dr. Stine co-developed and co-taught a Principles of Toxicology course that was open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Her research interests are in the area of mechanisms of toxicity and focus on the role of stress proteins in cellular function and dysfunction. Dr. Stine has also authored or co-authored several research publications in the field of toxicology.

Thomas Miller Brown, PhD, is president of Genectar Com LLC in Whitefish, Montana, USA which conducts research in toxicology, genetics, and genomics, now focusing on pigment cell development in the common wood nymph butterfly as a melanoma model. He earned his PhD from Michigan State University. Formerly a professor, Dr. Brown taught Toxicology of Insecticides, Principles of Toxicology, and Insect Biotechnology. He also led the discovery of an actively transposing short interspersed nuclear element (Insect Science 16:219–226). He has published papers on the biochemical toxicology of organophosphorus compounds and on the mechanisms of insecticide resistance in insects. Dr. Brown has also conducted research at Nagoya University and Tsukuba Science City in Japan.

Sets a New Standard for Textbooks on Corporate Governance From an International Perspective

International Corporate Governance stands out as textbook that looks at the topic from a truly global standard. Author Marc Goergen first came to my attention in the 1990s as a member of the European Corporate Governance Network (ECGN), since renamed the European Corporate Governance Institute (ECGI). He brings both breadth and depth to a wide range of topics presented in lay terms.

I agree with Goergen's bias; "diversity is not necessarily bad... no single system of corporate governance is infallible." Intelligent readers of his book will be in a good position to pick and choose from among best practices that can be worked into their own company's regulatory framework or to lobby to change that framework. The book might be especially helpful to students in the UK and US who want an international perspective, since corporate governance frameworks in countries outside these spheres tend to be quite different, with dominant shareowners.

The book does a good job of covering principal-agent theory and a better job with regard to emerging behavioral issues than can be found in most US textbooks but excels at not only describing various taxonomies used internationally but in discussing distinctive features, context, advantages and shortcomings.

Especially important to US students of corporate governance might be Goergen's discussion of stakeholder and sustainability issues, since the US lags in these areas. See, for example, Singapore's recently announced revised Code of Corporate Governance embedding stakeholder, sustainability and other concerns into the fiduciary duties of boards.
Of course, the book also offers valuable advice to those in "emerging markets," specifically what individual companies can do to improve access to outside capital through cross-listing and taking other measures to reduce risks for minority shareowners.

The book includes expected learning outcomes, extensive use of tables and charts, reading lists, discussion questions, exercises and a helpful glossary. Although written primarily for students, directors and investors would also greatly benefit from the knowledge and insights Goergen instills in his readers.

A Brief Overview and Introduction

Dan Cohn-Sherbok's JUDIASM: RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD offers the student of comparative religion and/or Judaism a brief overview of crucial themes in Judaic belief and practice. The work consists of approximately 100 pages of text, followed by a glossary and pronunciation guide (both of which should be enormously helpful to novices). The book's strengths include the following: a) readers are given a strong introduction to Orthodox, Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist, and Humanistic Judaism; and b) a chapter on contemporary observance takes the reader through religious practices. I would submit that the book would be even more helpful had it offered a more extensive discussion of historical Judaism and textual exegesis. However, the author did not seek to write a comprehensive history; that which is presented is solid, well-written, and student-friendly.

Very interesting reading on the search for truth!

Reading this book gives one the delightful sense of seeing a kaleidoscope in action or of seeing fractals unfold. In describing how truth is sought in letters, words, and texts, and how symbolism is applied and sought and re-applied, one starts to sense the joy and sheer intensity with which scholars probe the Torah for divine direction as well as hints about the nature of reality. These are material and insights I just would not have seen otherwise.

This book is well written and describes at a basic and relatable level the fundamental principles of Judaism. I am using it for a religious studies class and find it very helpful. It is so easy to understand that I may use it in the confirmation class that I teach. Great value.
