A great place to start....

When it comes to jazz harmony, jazz comping can be placed into three groups:
1. 3-note Freddie style comping for the big band jazz swing group.
2. 4-notes chords comping for the blues, bop, funky jazz, and bluesy jazz style of playing.
3. 4-notes or more chords specifically for the chord melody style which include the bass, chord and melody.
the 2nd and 3rd group is the most popular because of the rise of the small group playing and consequently the fall of the big swing band.
Anywho, this book takes you from group 1 to group 3. However, it dwells on the 2nd and 3rd group more than the 1st group. thus, this book is geared towards small group jazz band. Nonetheless, the book is formated as follows
It has three sections: Voicing, rhythmic application, and chord progressions (including jazz blues). The jazz progressions are broken into smaller grouping (II-V-I, ii-V-i, and many others) and then the author shows how they are put together to create most of the jazz songs found in jazz fake book.
Linear/structural approach refers to the voice leading and vertical sonority. In other words, the chords are arranged so that your chords moves smoothly from one chord to the next.Hence the title of the book, jazz harmony on the guitar (a linear /structural approach). It also has comping patterns.
I gave it 4 stars because it is lacking actual jazz standards except for the blues. Even though most of the jazz patterns played in jazz are covered in this book, I think the author should have used actual standards so that the student can really learn how to apply those concepts to fake books. You should be able to comp your way through any Jazz fake book or chord chart. In fact, you should be able to create your own version of jazz standards based on the fake book composition. It is only then, when you can consider yourself a jazz rhythm guitarist.
This book will only supply you with the insight into comping and some great chord connections but leave the rest up to you.
The Maiden Voyage Guitar book/CD by Mike Diliddo would be a perfect companion for this book because this book contains actual jazz standards with back tracks so you can see, hear, and play along with the jazz band and uses many of the chords found in the Jazz Harmony book.

One of the best!

This book had helped me leaps and bounds while learning to comp in varying rhythms and styles including the bossa-nova. It's also easy to read and very straight forward as far as trying to understand how to apply these techniques to your playing. The book gives even beginners great chord diagrams and formulas for creating your own chord voicings that they can apply to their playing right away. It's been so helpful in my playing that I even get this book for my high school and adult students who show an interest in jazz as well as learning how to construct chords on their own. The format of the book is great because you can learn the chords and then practice them in common progressions with common strumming rhythms right away. The cd that comes along with it makes sure you are doing things right and it's very hard to get lost or confused about what to do. Stan has made a great contribution to jazz guitar education with this easy to understand, yet powerful book. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in learning jazz voicings and rhythms, and wants to apply what they've learned right away.

Dense book for the committed

I bought this book at a time when I was dedicated to learning guitar and interested in Jazz chords and technique. I found it hard to get past the first sections because the book moved so quickly. It would probably be a great reference book for extension on a book with a slower, more step by step approach.
