Good information, strange organization

This book has detailed information, but the order in which the information is arranged is not intuitive. For example, I found it much more helpful to read the contextual information in section 4 before diving into sections 2 and 3. Also, in the instructions for downloading the DITA OpenToolkit, there's a step that says "Add the bin directory to your Path environment variable." If you don't know how to do this, you're stuck. The instructions for doing this step come up 4 pages later, but there isn't a cross-reference to know that it's there until you're thoroughly frustrated. I ordered some other DITA-related books to get up to speed and, once I do, this book will probably be more helpful. And, if you're using DITA with Framemaker, there are probably much better books for you.

Return to DITA

I am returning to DITA after 4 years and found the book to be a great review of the elements and how they all interplay when using the DITA methodology.
However, if you are brand new to DITA, this book presupposes a basic understanding of the DITA concepts. Once you have these, I would add this book to my library. This book explains how authors can correctly apply the DITA elements and attributes to their content. This task is often a source of frustration to authors who are new to DITA and are used to applying formatting to content in lieu of semantic tags.
