About the Author

George King, M.D., is research director and chief scientific officer at the Joslin Diabetes Center. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The Way We Should Be Doing It

This book offers several strategies to up-regulate insulin and keep diabetes or pre-diabetes in check. Hopefully without medication. Yes, as Mary Lane said, it is a lot like Dr. Fuhrman. So are a lot of other books. Fuhrman didn't invent "eat lots of veg". Unlike Fuhrman, though, this book allows protein in small amounts with every meal. Fuhrman hides behind his veganism. He is also a one-trick pony, in that he thinks all our cures can be done with food alone. His exercise program is basically non-existent. Dr. King applies his strategies equally and talks about things like brown fat that can help burn fat. There's a lot of information in this book that's different from other views. But basically (dietwise) it's the same as others who believe in very low fat, moderate veg, lighter protein and plenty of fiber. Fiber is his big push when it comes to food. I have learned a lot from Dr. Fuhrman's way of eating but I will never be (almost completely) vegan, as he suggests. Nor do I think it's necessary. Dr. King's diet is a basic, no-nonsense plan that makes sense for me. He validates, for me, Dr. Fuhrman and others who believe in increased fiber. Where Dr. King parts ways with Dr. Fuhrman is in the several other strategies implemented (including modest amounts of protein daily) to get rid of diabetes (and high blood pressure, as long as you're at it).

Great book that is easy to use in everyday life!!!

Finally, a common sense approach to healthy living written for regular people like myself. This is a great book that tells you how to eat a healthy diet that is also delicious, meaning it will help you develop lasting habits. The goals and strategies are all easy to adapt to your everyday life- daily walks, eat more good carbohydrates (vegetables, legumes, fruits), mental relaxation techniques. The best part of the book is that it introduces you to an easy and delicious way to eat healthy- the RAD diet, aka Rural Asian Diet. This is so much easier and more sustainable b/c it tastes good. Traditional diets with a ton of restrictions are so hard to keep going.

In all, an awesome book!

I received this book as a gift from Dr. George King to help me in my continuing struggle to control my Type 2 high blood glucose. I read with interest Dr. George King's proposed 8 core strategies and a life time road map for a comprehensive blood glucose management plan.
Knowledge is power. Strategy is a plan to achieve a specific goal. In this book "The Diabetes Reset", I found both the scientific knowledge (based on Joslin Diabetes Center research and other diabetes research findings) and 8 strategies such as trying the Rural Asian Diet (RAD), attempting to achieve a 5 to 7 percent weight loss, doing more aerobic exercise/strength training,activating our "brown fat" to burn calories, reducing inflammation, getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep, reducing stress and managing mental health, ingesting more foods rich in "phase 2 antioxidants".
This book is very helpful to me and many other persons with diabetes. I also found the content of this this book a source of inspiration, encouragement and hope. Thank you Dr. George King for sharing scientific knowledge, research findings, and strategies for meeting the diabetes challenges. I give the book a five stars.
