Ted Strehlow grew up with Aborigines on the mission, and his knowledge of their customs and stories was unique. The book combines this knowledge, with a detailed awareness of the landscape and its sacred places, the battles that have been fought there, the lonely outposts of white settlement, and of the Biblical resonances of their own journey through this desert setting.

A novel about a son's memories of his courageous father.

This is the only novel written by the Australian ethnographic filmmaker T.G.H. Strehlow. It documents the last journey of his father, Carl Strehlow, which ended at a Central Australia hotel at Horshoe Bend. The text weaves Aranda Dreamtime legends with the thoughts and observations of a 14-year-old boy. It also gives rare insight into the workings of the Australian Lutheran Church in the early part of this century and records the harsh conditions encountered by the "bush folk" of the cattle stations in the centre of Australia at a time when there was only one car in the state. It is a story of love, courage, faith and despair that, at times, parallels Christ's journey to the cross.

About the Author
Sandra N. Elbaum was an ESL Instructor at Truman College, one of the City Colleges of Chicago, for thirty-six years. She has also taught in elementary and high schools, and in Mexico, Puerto Rico, the former Soviet Union, and Slovakia. Sandy is the author of the popular series Grammar in Context, now in its Fifth Edition. Remember the Celts

This book is just one of many in the Myths and Civilization series. Myths and Civilizations of the Celts is nicely organized, condensing the long history of the Celts into less than fifty pages. The book is divided into sections; each section begins with a fable and is followed by illustrations and two pages describing the different origins, beliefs, legends and societies among the Celts. A brief description of many Celtic stories such as the Legend of Maon, the Tragedy of Cuchulain, and the Tale of Peredur is also provided.
The history of the Celts is rarely studied. Particularly in this day and age when countries are overwhelmed with equality and compensating minorities for the atrocities committed against them. It is essential to learn about all cultural, ethnic, and racially distinct groups, particularly those living within a larger group. Minorities have been subjected to the most abuse and humiliation. It is important not to forget the culture of the majority for the majority has its own traditions, beliefs, and legends essential to its existence. One day the present majority will be a minority.

Buy this for the illustrations

As an elementary school kid, I checked out this book ( and Robin Place's The Celts) from the library over a dozen times to stare at the illustrations. The illustrations are all drawings in color, very vivid and full of detail and human emotion. Of course it isn't great art--but it sure could set a kid's imagination on fire. There is on illustration of a trader leaving on an expedition, turning back to wave at his family standing by their home. It is full of illustrations like these, that are very easy to relate to. As a 10 year old, the pictures really made me realize history was "real" and that people back then were human just like us.

Actually, I was more inspired by these drawings then by the more glitzy DK Eyewitness series. The Eyewitness series is all photographs of artifacts or dressed up actors standing stiffly with emotionless faces...so it doesn't make history feel alive at all. These illustrations do. The drawings are still stuck in my head, more than a decade later. Also, check out Robin Place's The Celts (MacDonald Educational People of the Past Series), those drawings are even more poignant.

Absolutely worth reading!

Having read many, many books regarding this subject, I have to confess I went into this one prepared to be disappointed. Boy, was I in for a big surprise!

This book is awesome in every respect. It blends channeling experience masterfully with the past life regression seemlessly and flawlessly. I hung on every word, and could completely identify with the author, his friends and the subject matter, barely able to put it down.

The printing and craftmanship of the book is a little bit odd, but after the first page I hardly noticed. I love the format and the way the author set up his story, which is compelling and authentic. Worthy of many more than 5 stars. If you want to get down to the nitty gritty of past life regression and channeling, then this book won't disappoint. I promise.
