About the Author
JOHN ROBERTS is one of the best-known authorities on twentieth-century British warship design. Co-author of two highly regarded studies of British Battleships and British Cruisers, he is also a fine draughtsman and produced a number of the volumes in the 'Anatomy of the Ship' series, subjects including Dreadnought and Hood.

Visual History

As the publishers blurb states, this is a reprint of an older work by the author, reflecting and benefiting from some years of research on the topic of the Royal Navy's battlecruisers. The book is a larger format, and is filled with an amazing array of photographs of these ships not only as built, but some that I have not seen before of them in service. There are also color scans of the original construction drawings from several vessels. On the inside back cover is an envelope holding a roughly C-sized sheet of HMS Princess Royal in external top and side views, hull plan, and detail drawings of the control positions atop the tripod and some sectional views at various frames. Printed on gloss paper, hardback and sewn spine, this book should physically last a long time.
This is not an expansive nor highly technical work that one might expect of Norman Friedman (as in "The British Battleship, 1906-1946" or anything else Friedman has authored,) or an encyclopedic volume as that created by R.A. Burt (specifically "British Battleships of World War One",) but it is more detailed than the latter and more readable than the former. John Roberts does a more comprehensive job describing the origins and evolutions of the type from the late 19th century to the immediate post-WWI period than does DK Brown ("The Grand Fleet" and "Nelson to Vanguard".) Roberts also provides an interesting point of view to those of the other authors, as well, making this well worth reading. Most of the book is devoted to the early ships, their pre-Dreadnought armored cruiser siblings, and the impetus offered by their German Navy contemporaries, than the latter Hood, Renown & Repulse, and does not cover the various modernization programs those three went through in the interwar period.
It would have been very desirable to have seen the discussion extend to the end of WWII and the close of the "big gun" period of naval warfare, and the changes the three survivors of the First World War went through leading up to and during that conflict (and how only one of the three would survive that conflict.) Despite that perceived shortcoming, this is a good reference and history of the type, and I am happy to have bought it.

More of a reprint than upgrade

This book is an update of an earlier book by Roberts entitled simply "Battlecruisers" in Chatham's Shipshape series. The title of the present book is an upgrade in that it much better reflects the contents than the previous title. The main addition to the present work are the inclusion of 16 color pages which reproduce original Admiralty drawings of the ships. These look very nice and all but since the originals were so huge very little of the writing on the drawings can be made out and at this size only the biggest details can be picked out. The captions go some way towards compensation but the impression one gets is padding to entice owners of the previous edition to buy this one. It worked with me.
The book itself is a top notch product. The book begins with the origins of the battlecruiser as a type, works its way through the various classes designed and built before and during the war (starting with Invincible and ending with Hood, including Courageous, Glorious, and Furious but not post war modifications), has individual chapters on machinery, armament, and armor, and finally some conclusions. All of this is done quite competently but suffers in comparison to Friedman's book that also covers these ships (and much more). The conclusion is probably the most interesting chapter. Roberts makes the interesting point that the German's approached the battlecruiser as a faster second class battleship while the British concept was an up gunned armored cruiser. I can't accept his argument that the British concept depended on the Germans not building ships to match. I think the idea was for the British to set the pace of warship development knowing that Germany was determined for war. Britain could not allow the Germans to introduce either the all big gun battleship or the battlecruiser knowing that theGermans would determine when a war would start.
The biggest drawback to the book is the lack of drawings which is ironic considering Roberts' reputation as a draftsman. There is a wonderful unbound foldout of the Queen Mary in a pocket on the inside rear cover but that's about it. No scale is given but it measures out to about 1:300. There are some armoring diagrams for each class.
The book is recommended if you do not own the previous edition. If you do, you'll have to decide for yourself whether the 16 pages of color plans are worth the price of the newer edition.

An excellent resource

Excellent book overall; well-researched and presented like John Robert's books usually are. I would like to have seen more on the "light battlecruisers", Glorious, Furious and Courageous, but I assume they were in there original configurations for a short time, there is not that much to tell. Fascinating, if not bizarre ships to be sure. Good coverage of the earlier classes, as expected. An excellent one-stop book to learn all there is to know about these fascinating ships.
