About the Author
About the authors L. A. Geddes is the Showalter Distinguished Professor of Bioengineering and Director of the Hillenbrand Biomedical Engineering Center at Purdue University. Born in Scotland and educated in Canada, Dr. Geddes has documented research in electromyography, cardiac output, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ventricular defibrillation, blood pressure, and stimulating and recording electrodes. Along with his colleagues, Dr. Geddes developed several new techniques for teaching in medical education and has written six books and over 600 scientific papers. He is a member of the IEEE (Fellow), the American College of Cardiology (Fellow), and the Australasian College of Physical Scientists in Medicine (Fellow). He serves as consultant to numerous scientific journals and to the NIH, FDA, and NSF Dr. Geddes is listed in Who's Who, Leaders in the Southwest, American Men of Science, and The Royal Blue Book. He earned his PhD in physiology at Baylor University College of Medicine, and his bachelor's and master's degrees and DSc Honoris Causa at McGill University. LEE E. BAKER received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Kansas, the M.S. in electrical engineering from Rice Institute, and the PhD in physiology from Baylor College of Medicine. He is the Robert L. Parker Sr. Centennial Professor in Engineering and Director of the Biomedical Engineering Program at the University of Texas at Austin.

I am working for pacemaker company as research scientist and this book teaches many facets of medical device application. This book is almost "bible" for me seeking new ideas based on firm theory and application. I peruse a lot in work place as well as home and it is worthwhile to invest in this book.

Good book but needs an update

The Mac Hacker's Handbook covers a lot of useful technical topics surrounding vulnerability analysis and exploit development for Mac OS X. That said, it doesn't so much teach you directly, as guide your learning. For example, it introduces the use of DTrace on OS X for dynamic analysis. It makes a very good case for DTrace's usefulness in reverse engineering, and for you to go out on your own and learn about it. Its DTrace examples aren't really freestanding, and require some background that you must get yourself. If the book were to give you the necessary background on every topic it introduces, it would be an enormous tome, and the authors probably would still be writing it.

Think of the book as explaining to you what all tools you need in your Mac hacking toolbox and why you need them, and how to put them together once you have them. It's up to you do go develop those skills on your own.

The biggest shortcoming of the book, however, is it is out of date. The concepts are sound and still very applicable, but the examples are written for OS X 10.5. Most do not work on Snow Leopard. Many you can get to work if you go out and beat the pavement trying to figure them out. I recommend this, but be aware, your progress through the book will be slow going as you get bogged down trying to figure out how to adapt each example so that it works.

This book succeeds if taken for what it is: a guide for your learning. You'll need to invest a fair amount of sweat equity to get the most out of it, though.

The best Mac security reference

The Mac Hacker's Handbook is the best reference for Mac-specific attack information that I have found. At 368 pages, it may appear small compared to the typical 750+ page security tome. That's because the authors have done a near-perfect job of sticking to the topic at hand, the Mac. The authors do not succumb to the usual temptation to try and teach assembly language or reverse engineering. Rather, they do an excellent job touching on those topics in an OS X context, and assume the reader has a little background in that area already, or can otherwise keep up. I have done some limited research into the areas of Mac malware and process injection in the past. This book has done a fantastic job of filling in many holes in my knowledge that I hadn't been able to take care of before. Plus, it introduced me to a number of Mac-specific security features I wasn't aware of before. Highly recommended for anyone interested in Mac security.

Breaks new ground into the Mac

As a security professional Mac's are an interesting subject. They combine many of the best features from other operating systems into a wonderful package. I purchased a Macbook during a pen test about 8 months ago and have been in love with it since then. Before this book looking at security on Apple products was a difficult dive into the unknown. Charlie and Dino have done a lot of hard work and figured out the internals of OS X as related to security. They clearly present what's going inside the OS and how they learned the internals. This enables other security professionals to follow their method to both gain better understanding and to know what's wrong when something inevitably changes.

I'd definitely recommend this book for experienced security professionals looking to do exploit development on the Mac.

I have done masters degree in MATHEMATICS and have done some management courses also. Here I am a PROFESSOR in a COLLEGE where students do B.SC. from LONDON university under EXTERNAL PROGRAM. One of the subjects I teach is "MANAGEMENT SCIENCE METHODS". There is a portion namely "SOFT OR" for which we could not find material from any where else. This book has not only no alternate but also written in very simple way with technical examples and flow diagrams. My students last year got the DISTINCTION in this subject and this year I am also expecting DISTINCTION again from students. So I wanted to contact the auther and compliment the person. Finally as a teacher I would recommend strongly this book for the students of BSC. in MSM especially for the SOFT OR section, this is a must read.

beginner level & biblical references--much more effective choices out there

This is a beginning overview of a number of different topics, but doesn't go into enough detail on any one of them. If you're looking for suggestions on how to dress, for instance, this doesn't go much further than "dress a level up" and look good. There is a bit more on negotiating skills, but there are other books that go into far greater detail, even for professionals just starting out.

Each chapter starts with a biblical quote, and the author references God often enough that it starts to feel like this belongs in the Christian section. Fine if you don't mind this, but quite alienating if you are either not Christian or don't appreciate mixing religion in with workplace discussions.

For productivity, I'd recommend Getting Things Done & for workplace dress and behaviors (for men and women) I'd recommend You've Only got Three Seconds by Camille Lavington instead.

Good info, terrific ideas, entertaining to read!

Dondi's wisdom and sense of humor combine to deliver really insightful, powerful and useful lessons on growing your career. It may have been written for women, but there's a lot in here for us guys as well! Her humor and story telling style make reading this book a delight... it's not a bitter pill - or a "pill" at all - more like a night at the movies! If you've ever had the pleasure of hearing Dondi speak in person (as I have), you can actually "hear" her in your head... her terrific personality shines through... no kidding! My job is training and development in a 500+ person industrial company, and I've purchased copies for every woman in our organization. I recommend this to anyone who really wants to maximize their career potential... and have a blast doing it!

Haynes has in the past been one of my first choices for manuels. This one is so simple its silly. Of little value to a mechanic. The tone of "this is a spark plug" could be forgiven if the coverage was complete, but it isn't. This is especially true of wiring diagrams. Very inaccurate. Unforgivable in MC troubleshooting.

About the Author
JOHN ROBERTS is one of the best-known authorities on twentieth-century British warship design. Co-author of two highly regarded studies of British Battleships and British Cruisers, he is also a fine draughtsman and produced a number of the volumes in the 'Anatomy of the Ship' series, subjects including Dreadnought and Hood.

As the publishers blurb states, this is a reprint of an older work by the author, reflecting and benefiting from some years of research on the topic of the Royal Navy's battlecruisers. The book is a larger format, and is filled with an amazing array of photographs of these ships not only as built, but some that I have not seen before of them in service. There are also color scans of the original construction drawings from several vessels. On the inside back cover is an envelope holding a roughly C-sized sheet of HMS Princess Royal in external top and side views, hull plan, and detail drawings of the control positions atop the tripod and some sectional views at various frames. Printed on gloss paper, hardback and sewn spine, this book should physically last a long time.

This is not an expansive nor highly technical work that one might expect of Norman Friedman (as in "The British Battleship, 1906-1946" or anything else Friedman has authored,) or an encyclopedic volume as that created by R.A. Burt (specifically "British Battleships of World War One",) but it is more detailed than the latter and more readable than the former. John Roberts does a more comprehensive job describing the origins and evolutions of the type from the late 19th century to the immediate post-WWI period than does DK Brown ("The Grand Fleet" and "Nelson to Vanguard".) Roberts also provides an interesting point of view to those of the other authors, as well, making this well worth reading. Most of the book is devoted to the early ships, their pre-Dreadnought armored cruiser siblings, and the impetus offered by their German Navy contemporaries, than the latter Hood, Renown & Repulse, and does not cover the various modernization programs those three went through in the interwar period.

It would have been very desirable to have seen the discussion extend to the end of WWII and the close of the "big gun" period of naval warfare, and the changes the three survivors of the First World War went through leading up to and during that conflict (and how only one of the three would survive that conflict.) Despite that perceived shortcoming, this is a good reference and history of the type, and I am happy to have bought it.

More of a reprint than upgrade

This book is an update of an earlier book by Roberts entitled simply "Battlecruisers" in Chatham's Shipshape series. The title of the present book is an upgrade in that it much better reflects the contents than the previous title. The main addition to the present work are the inclusion of 16 color pages which reproduce original Admiralty drawings of the ships. These look very nice and all but since the originals were so huge very little of the writing on the drawings can be made out and at this size only the biggest details can be picked out. The captions go some way towards compensation but the impression one gets is padding to entice owners of the previous edition to buy this one. It worked with me.

The book itself is a top notch product. The book begins with the origins of the battlecruiser as a type, works its way through the various classes designed and built before and during the war (starting with Invincible and ending with Hood, including Courageous, Glorious, and Furious but not post war modifications), has individual chapters on machinery, armament, and armor, and finally some conclusions. All of this is done quite competently but suffers in comparison to Friedman's book that also covers these ships (and much more). The conclusion is probably the most interesting chapter. Roberts makes the interesting point that the German's approached the battlecruiser as a faster second class battleship while the British concept was an up gunned armored cruiser. I can't accept his argument that the British concept depended on the Germans not building ships to match. I think the idea was for the British to set the pace of warship development knowing that Germany was determined for war. Britain could not allow the Germans to introduce either the all big gun battleship or the battlecruiser knowing that theGermans would determine when a war would start.

The biggest drawback to the book is the lack of drawings which is ironic considering Roberts' reputation as a draftsman. There is a wonderful unbound foldout of the Queen Mary in a pocket on the inside rear cover but that's about it. No scale is given but it measures out to about 1:300. There are some armoring diagrams for each class.

The book is recommended if you do not own the previous edition. If you do, you'll have to decide for yourself whether the 16 pages of color plans are worth the price of the newer edition.

An excellent resource

Excellent book overall; well-researched and presented like John Robert's books usually are. I would like to have seen more on the "light battlecruisers", Glorious, Furious and Courageous, but I assume they were in there original configurations for a short time, there is not that much to tell. Fascinating, if not bizarre ships to be sure. Good coverage of the earlier classes, as expected. An excellent one-stop book to learn all there is to know about these fascinating ships.
