Edward Thomas has lived and worked in Sudan and South Sudan for over eight years. He worked as a teacher, researcher, and human rights worker for Sudanese and international organizations. Over the past five years, he has written numerous books, reports and articles about South Sudan and its neighbors.

A travel classic

This is a classic of travel writing. It is charming and vivid. It begins with a survey of traditional walking routes in England. Then it has a long chapter of antiquarian research on myths and history associated with waking paths. The body of the book is a day-by-day journal of a long walk in the southeast along the chalk hills from near Cambridge to near Salisbury. This is a walk he took for ten days in 1910. His world is newly industrialized, so there are telegraph lines and railways. Its world is largely the green world of late 19th century rural England. Thomas is an observant walker, engaging narrator, and a vivid writer.
The faults I have with this Kindle edition is that it is an unedited scanned text, full of scanning errors and run on pages. So there is some effort required to get used to it and some decoding required to get through the scanning faults. The effort is well worth the work. As a bonus the pencil illustrations throughout are charming and appropriate.
This is the book Robert Macfarlane kept with him while hiking England preparing to write THE OLD WAYS.
