An Up and Coming Writer to Watch

I read Jayne Conway's first novel, "What if I Fly?" pretty much on a whim and liked it quite a bit -- surprisingly so, in fact, since romances aren't usually my thing. But she won me over, and so I had no hesitation diving headlong into book two -- "As It Seems" -- and once again I was rewarded.

There is unquestionably a certain tone to both of Ms. Conway's novels to date: a strong sense of place, the challenges of finding and keeping love, devotion to family and friends, being hurt and searching for solace, redemption and peace. But "As It Seems" takes these themes further. The characters are fuller, the descriptions richer, the ultimate payoff greater. I really enjoyed the first book, but this second one shows a writer growing even more in her craft.

I realize this review doesn't tell you all that much about the plot of "As It Seems" or how it unfolds. But I'll leave that to other reviewers and the book jacket. Better yet, explore it for yourself.

Not all is as it seems

I remember reading an advice column in which the adviser - Ann Landers, probably - said that people treat you the way you let them treat you, and if you accept certain disrespects or poor behavior, then you have taught those who inflict that upon you that you will accept it.

As I read this book, I kept thinking about that, wishing there was some way I could shout this advice to Libby.

She and Ted have been married over a dozen years, and Libby considers their marriage to be good. Passionate, even. They have frequent and climatic sex, as frequent as they can, anyway, considering Ted's travel schedule. Parents to two children, Libby heads toward forty feeling happy and content.

The first dent in the armor of her marriage is enough to fill Libby with rage and impotence. She and Ted cannot agree on something that will alter their family tremendously. Ted wants it, while Libby vehemently disagrees. As concerning and potentially damaging as this is, it seems like a non-issue compared to the next, deeper, more painful and frightening dent.

It is this second one that alerts Libby to the truths about her marriage, things she has overlooked and ignored. She was happy. Ted was happy. They were raising kind, considerate children, and they lived in a well-to-do neighborhood. They were comfortable and secure. But this fissure, something Libby stumbles upon accidentally, could break them. Whether it does or not depends on Libby's response.

Libby is a likable character. For all of her wealth and privilege, she is far from being a snob. In fact, she resists moving to the tony neighborhood Ted chose because she fears becoming a Stepford wife. She has good friends, and it's clear that she is a good mother. She's good. But Libby is also not nearly as strong as you want her to be. She is not, as the title suggests, as it seems. You expect her to be somewhat steely: Ted travels a lot, which puts the burden of taking care of their children while juggling her job solely upon her. She is the disciplinarian, and she accepts no breaches of protocol. Yet when faced with these two dents - the second one in particular - Libby concedes to Ted. You will lose patience with her. You will be furious and frustrated with her. I sure was.

As for Ted, well. Ted actually is exactly as he seems. Selfish, narcissistic, and far weaker than his wife.

One thing Libby discovers is the importance of friends. She has two upon whom she relies quite heavily, but even then, there may be some things that are not as they seem. Libby also learns that love itself is not as it seems. You think you know what love is, and you think you know what your marriage is, until you realize you don't.

I liked this book. I like the way Jayne Conway tells her story, alternating between Libby's and another character's perspectives. I didn't like how she wrote Libby, only because I didn't want Libby to be so weak. But then it turned out that Libby is not as she seems, and Conway's characterization of her made sense.

Realistic portrayal of betrayal and its aftermath

As It Seems revolves around 2 married couples: Libby Fitzgerald (girl next door type) lives with Ted and their kids, Emma and Nate right next door to Truman Whitaker (Mr. Perfect) and his wife Caroline and their 2 daughters, Sadie and Bette. Caro and Ted are the workaholic breadwinners while Libby and Tru are both stay at home parents who share a close friendship. The past 12 years of marriage have seemed perfect until the illusions come crashing down.

As It Seems deals with betrayal and everything that comes in its aftermath: insecurity, mistrust, self-doubt, anger and depression. It is also about seeing what was in front of you all along. The story is realistic and the writing fluid.

I did enjoy As It Seems although it was difficult to read at times. This was due to the emotions stirred in me as I read and not due to the writing itself. This is the first story I have read by this author but it will not be the last.

Rabbi David Fohrman lectures internationally on Biblical themes. He heads the Curriculum Initiative of the Areivim Philanthropic Group, and directs the Hoffberger Institute for Text Study. He currently resides in Woodmere, NY with his wife and children, where he also serves as resident scholar at the Young Israel of Woodmere. Rabbi Fohrman's first book, The Beast that Crouches at the Door, was a finalist for the 2007 National Jewish Book Award. In earlier years, Rabbi Fohrman served as a senior editor and writer for ArtScroll's Schottenstein Edition of the Talmud, and taught Biblical themes at the Johns Hopkins University. His recorded lectures are available at Alephbeta.org.

This is Torah learning as it should be.

I cant praise the Rabbis intuitivness enough in peeling away the layers of context and subcontext in the book of Genesis. You think that having studied Rashi(considered to be the pre-eminent authority when it comes to Torah interpetation), and others such as Rambam, Malbim, Ramban and Ibn Ezra, and many modern Jewish theology including those with radical notions on what is happening in the text, that you have studied it all.
Well guess what? Close to forty years im studying and this Rabbi comes along and make mockery of all I thought I knew. I thought I asked all the possible questions on oxymorons, improbabilities, contradictions and sometimes plain incrdulousness at how the narratives unfold. Well I guess I wasnt all that smart having missed so many of the finer details of whats happening in the text expounded on by the Rabbi, but gosh he makes it look so, "why didnt I think of it" simple that I just have to kick myself. I look foreward to many more years of kicking myself if only the Rabbi will oblige us by putting more of his teachings put into print.

Finally.....the Truth

I want to point out one thing: This book is NOT only for jewish people. It is for anyone of any religion (or no religion) who is interested in the Bible or the Adam & Eve story. It is definitely also for people who made fun of the story and think it's just for kids - this book shows that by asking the most difficult questions in the Adam & Eve story, one actually comes to a true understanding of what the Bible is trying to tell us. ALL questions can and must be asked!!

Otherwise, I fully agree with the comments in the other reviews. This book is a very readable, yet deep and true-to-the-text analysis of the Adam&Eve/Cain&Abel stories. It's not some homiletic interpretation of the Bible but a very precise, critical, compelling analysis of what the Bible is really trying to tell us. ...and (while the author doesn't address this directly) this helps better understand mankind, the human condition, and...ourselves.

Rabbi Fohrman has been teaching a refreshing and insightful analysis of the Hebrew Bible now for years but his first published book brings it all together in a wonderfully cohesive and readable manner. He has an excellent point to make: the Hebrew Bible from the very beginning has much to teach us about ourselves today but only if you examine it carefully for all its messages. Rabbi Fohrman is a master teacher and his writing is always engaging--you have to keep turning the pages. I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone interested in what God has to say to each and every one of us. Thank you, Rabbi Fohrman.

It doesn't have to be difficult. I have always believed in the ability of people. When I began my career in acute medicine, "upper-level" knowledge always had a mystique. Medicine is cluttered with paradigms on how things should always be done. I can recall boundaries to learning. Skills were assigned to the level of licensure. For example, a paramedic could do this, a registered nurse could do that, and only the doctor could perform certain procedures and tasks. Reading the 12-lead ECG was one of those things reserved for the doctor.

I recall sitting in on a few classes with physicians and some experienced cardiac care nurses to learn this advanced knowledge. Armed with an aboveaverage skill at recognizing basic cardiac rhythms, I set out to learn. It was after the first slide that I learned that I was in way over my head. Sure, I could recognize a P wave, but I could not spell or pronounce some of the information. One thing I did remember, however, was ST segment elevation. I saw a picture of that on the first slide. For the next 7 hours and 55 minutes, I did not understand why all the technical measuring and laborious tasks required for recognizing this elevation were necessary.

I remember an occasion when my paramedic instructor pointed out ST segment elevation on a Lead II rhythm strip. It really didn't faze me because, on the basis of the patient's history and complaint and the current assessment findings, I was convinced that it was a heart attack, even without the ECG. The ECG monitor was there to help me look for ectopic beats and arrhythmias.

After the class, I started to ask questions and pose analogies to the emergency physicians and cardiologists who had presented the seminars. I have spent many hours in seminars and in reading almost every book I can find on the subject of 12-lead ECGs and have found that it really doesn't have to be difficult. It's all in how you learn it.

One analogy I use in my seminars is that of the German chocolate cake. My sister Janie made a wonderful German chocolate cake. She made it from scratch, gathering all the ingredients and even grating the coconut and pecans for the icing. It took a long time, but it was a great cake. Now, people can buy German chocolate cake mix in a store and just add water and spread the frosting. The two cakes taste the same, look the same—they are the same. As with the German chocolate cake, I realize that there are many different ways to read a 12-lead ECG. This book presents the "just-add-water" type.

Life is about change. Human beings are not programmed to stay the same. This book is based on the Multi-Lead Medics™ 12-Lead ECG Interpretation Workshops I have presented to thousands of paramedics, nurses, respiratory therapists, doctors, and other acute-care providers.

This book recognizes the roots and pathophysiology of more complex methods of electrocardiography. Many books are available on 12-lead ECG interpretation. However, this book is greatly simplified for the acute-care provider. It is simplified without compromising accuracy. All examples and 12-lead ECGs used in this book have been over-read by cardiologists for accuracy. Compared with more traditional methods of interpretation, these methods have demonstrated comparable accuracy and increased speed of diagnosis.

For simplicity, only the rapid methods of recognition are presented. Therefore, this book is comprehensive in topics, yet it is focused on a few easy-to-use methods for practical acute-care use. The book provides plenty of examples for you to practice your skills. I believe in the ability of the acute-care provider. This book is for you. Happy learning, and remember, it doesn't have to be difficult.

A MUST for advanced 12 lead interpretation. Hundreds of 12 leads to practice with, each chapter broken down with easy to understand instruction on interpretation rules. Go beyond just looking for the STEMI and always remember as Bob said and it is so true; "In lead II, you have no clue!". I use this book as a reference teaching my Paramedic students (Para-pups) and have seen outstanding results when they reach the field. Great book - Right to the point!

I attended Mr. Page's lecture at our State EMS Symposium, and while the book does not match the exciting style and fun atmosphere of his presentation (difficult for any book to do that, I think) as one previous reviewer mentioned, this book does a great job teaching this now essential skill. The information is organized in short-to-the-point segments and the information is presented in a common sense format. I have read or skimmed through many books on this subject matter and for me, this book did the best job. My recommendation is that every Paramedic or critical care provider should own this textbook. Surprising

This an interesting book. With the name "Prospero Burns" I was expecting the massacre of the Thousand Sons from the Space Wolves perspective. That's not what this is about. It's really the Road to Nikaea and how the Enemy can fool a Primarch.

I found it a bit irritating at times, but I'm really impressed how it all pulls together at the end. Bear is a great character, as well as Howser.
The basic idea of the story is very good, and the flaws of Russ are used quite well against him. Even if you struggle, I'd keep at it for the ending.

Best book in the Horus Heresy

I consider most Warhammer fiction simple and straight forward. When you buy a Warhammer novel, you know, most of the time, what you'll get - violence, destruction, killing and explosions. One of the main reasons for why I read Warhammer literature, is not for the novels themselves, but because of the awesome universe they describe. Dark, gritty, unforgiving and usually quite horrible. I love it.

Prospero Burns was, to me, yet another novel set in the Warhammer universe. I had few expectations, other than reading about my favorite legion. I was in for a surprise.

Being used to the simple nature of most Warhammer literature, I was amazed at how daring Mr. Abnett was with this novel. Although there was the required violence and brutality, Mr. Abnett chose to focus this novel on the soul and demeanor of the Vlka Fenryka. Throughout this novel, you are given beautiful insight into the mysteries of the Space Wolves, and I for one, am left with the impression of having read about a sentient pack of wolves, the space faring kind.

Thank you Dan Abnett, for writing something far deeper and more complex than we are usually granted when reading Warhammer.

An interesting and thoughtful book for Christian readers

Most Christians are familiar with the Bible verse, "And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men." Luke 2:52. How many though take time to ponder this verse long enough to consider that, as Christ is a believer's example in all things, His followers are to be "favor" seekers as well? Author Duane Vander Klok writes that favor can be defined as "the friendly disposition from which kindly acts proceed; to assist; to provide with special advantages; to receive preferential treatment." Who wouldn't appreciate a favorable response as opposed to an unfavorable one?

In his text, Vander Klok lays a foundation for Christians to better understand why God desires to bestow favor on His children and provides the biblical "how-tos" for achieving this advantageous position. He explains that favor does not simply land in a person's lap; rather, every Christian must actively pursue it. Likening favor to an untapped electrical system, believers need to release the power already present. The basics to experiencing a life of favor include adopting a mindset that expects/believes/confesses it. In other words, God desires to give favor to His children personally, but He in turn expects believers to confess it by faith and proactively set the process in motion.

Citing such promises as found in Psalm 103, Vander Klok proposes that God is eager to fulfill such wondrous pledges as offering: forgiveness, healing, redemption, providing goodness and mercy, meeting needs for physical health, meting out justice and freedom from oppression, and even extending salvation to one's children's children. One key point is that there is a significant difference between believing "in" and believing "for" favor. While most Christians believe in the concept, they fail to apply it to their own lives.

Vander Klok warns readers that gaining favor is not found by following a formula. Rather, there are five basic habits to hone and practice on a daily basis that afford Christians a robust and vibrant relationship with God. Vander Klok says that Bible reading tops his list, along with daily prayer, a study hour, physical exercise and maintaining an intimate family circle. On the flip side, he notes that there are also favor-hindering habits to be avoided. These cautionary notes include: a carnal mind not focused on the things of the Spirit, a careless thought life, and an unbelieving heart that speaks defeated, negative words. He also expounds upon the stories found in Scripture that discuss biblical characters who found favor with those in authority over them, such as Joseph, Ruth and Esther.

A particularly interesting section is Vander Klok's warnings about falling from favor by allowing bitterness to take root in the heart, becoming prideful or envious, and believing that once favored equals a trouble-free existence. Instead, Vander Klok challenges Christians to see favor as an opportunity to "favor" and bless others in increasing measure and as an extension of God's love and mercy

How to grow up as a Christian.

When I first saw the title to this book, I am embarrassed to admit I thought I was looking at some kind of prosperity teaching that was based on a formula. Having heard many messages by the author, I figured I should at least take a closer look...am I ever glad I did! This book is the spiritual version of that tender "birds and bees" how to grow up talk that your dad or mom had with you about coming of age. Want to be in a position of favor with God? It's as easy as growing up spiritually....and this book shows habits that cause growth, concrete examples, and fun stories to make it stick in your mind. This is one of those books that you might as well order several copies of, you'll want to hand one to each of your best friends, and keep one around for yourself to enjoy again and again.
