About the Author

William E. Cain is Mary Jewett Gaiser Professor of English at Wellesley College. Among his many publications is a monograph on American literary and cultural criticism, 1900-1945, in The Cambridge History of American Literature, Vol. 5 (2003). He is a co-editor of the Norton Anthology of Literary Theory and Criticism (2nd ed., 2010), and, with Sylvan Barnet, he has co-authored a number of books on literature and composition. His recent publications include essays on Ralph Ellison, Ernest Hemingway, George Orwell, Shakespeare, Edith Wharton, and the painter Mark Rothko.

Alice McDermott is the author of the forthcoming novel Someone and six previous novels, including After This; Child of My Heart; Charming Billy, winner of the 1998 National Book Award; and At Weddings and Wakes, all published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. That Night, At Weddings and Wakes, and After This were all finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. McDermott lives with her family outside Washington, D.C.

Lance E.�Newman is Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, where he teaches Early American Literature, Environmental Literature, and Creative Writing. He has also worked as a river guide for more than two decades, leading rafting trips in Southeastern Utah and in Grand Canyon. He is the author of The Grand Canyon Reader (University of California Press, 2011) and Our Common Dwelling: Henry Thoreau, Transcendentalism, and the Class Politics of Nature (Palgrave, 2005). With Joel Pace and Chris Keonig-Woodyard, he co-edited Transatlantic Romanticism: An Anthology of British, American, and Canadian Literature, 1767-1867 (Longman, 2006). He co-produced the documentary film Canyonlands: Edward Abbey and the Great American Desert (2011) with Roderick Coover. Newman’s poems have appeared in many print and web magazines, and he is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Come Kanab (Dusi-e/chaps Kollectiv, 2007) and 3by3by3 (Beard of Bees, 2010), both available free on the Web.

Hilary E. Wyss is Hargis Professor of American Literature at Auburn University, where she teaches courses in early American literature, American studies, and Native American studies. She is the author of over a dozen articles and book chapters as well as three books, including English Letters and Indian Literacies: Reading, Writing, and New England Missionary Schools, 1750-1830 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012);� Early Native Literacies in New England: a Documentary and Critical Anthology (University of Massachusetts Press, 2008, co-edited with Kristina Bross); and Writing Indians: Literacy, Christianity, and Native Community in Early America (University of Massachusetts Press, 2000). She has won teaching awards at Auburn University as well as national research grants to support her work.� She has served on the editorial board of the journal Early American Literature and was most recently the President of the Society of Early Americanists.

This interdisciplinary volume explores the conceptual and practical interplay of soil and geoforensics across the scientific, investigative and legal fields. Supported by reviews, case-studies from across the world, and reports of original research, it demonstrates the increasing convergence of a wide range of knowledge. It covers conceptual issues, evidence (from recovery to use in court), geoforensics, taphonomy, as well as leading-edge technologies. The application of the resultant soil forensics toolbox is leading to significant advances in improving crime detection, and environmental and national security.

A great read for all ages!

A must have for My Little Pony fans of all ages! As an adult, I have been a little hesitant to read the actual My Little Pony novels by GM Borrow, mostly because I feel I would not be able to relate and were a little out of my age bracket. I saw this book at B&N over the weekend and picked it up, not sure what to expect. I was hooked the minute I opened it. I have to warn fans of the series, if you are expecting the Mane Six to make an appearance you will be disappointed (they are mentioned once and not by name). But the book does not suffer for that. Expanding even further on the universe of Equestria, we are taken to ponyfied versions of Naples and other cities, and meet a bevy of new characters. Of course Daring Do is the star, and this is a totally awesome book because of it. Eagerly awaiting for more Daring Do tales!!!!!

I really enjoyed this Daring Do book

I really enjoyed this Daring Do book! I loved the Daring Do episodes of My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, and this book was even better than those episodes! It really got the feel of an adventure novel down! I'd recommend to fans of My Little Pony, or kids who enjoy adventure stories, even if they aren't really a fan of My Little Pony.

VERY ADVANCED

Like many other's daughters, mine loves MLP, and I do too. My daughter is 6 and starting to read on her own but this book I read to her every night. I couldn't believe the advanced words. I was substititing them with an easier synonym or explaining them as we went. This started happening so often it was almost every paragraph. The story has so many twists and new characters with crazy names it was so hard to keep track of everything and everyone, even for me! There is no lexile level yet I could find and I am very curious to see what it is. Cute book yes, but I feel it is more at a middle school level, and not for low level kids. They will get discouraged.

About the Author

Tamer Seckin, MD, is a Board Certified gynecologist and laparoscopic surgeon in private practice in New York City, practicing at North Shore LIJ/Lenox Hill Hospital. He specializes in treating women with endometriosis. He is an internationally known specialist in minimally invasive advanced (laparoscopic) surgery, and is among a very limited number of gynecologic surgeons in the United States who is exclusively committed to the Deep Laparoscopic Excision of endometriosis.

In 2009, Dr. Seckin founded the Endometriosis Foundation of America (EFA), the first research and advocacy foundation of its kind organized by a private physician to raise awareness and emphasize the critical value of surgical excision of endometriosis. Under his guidance as Medical Director, the EFA strives to increase disease recognition, provide advocacy, facilitate expert surgical training, and fund landmark endometriosis research.

A must read before making any decisions

You will learn what you need to know about Endometriosis. Your current doctor may not even know as much as you'd know about the disease, after reading this book.
It's written to general public. The language and the tone is very friendly.
It can be a little depressing to read edge cases and if you're like me you'll find yourself reading tons about what the book is referring to. It wasn't a fun ride for me learning about the details in this book, and I couldn't stop myself thinking a lot about the condition. But somebody has to do it; if it's not your current doctor then it'll be you until finding a specialist.
There are very good advice in the book. One of them is diet change. Being gluten free is almost a must with this condition. Inflammation from gluten sensitivity aggregates the side effects by possibly feeding the scar tissue internally. It's a hormonal problem but it builds up over the years. So does gluten sensitivity results. Dairy, is another thing to be stay away from.
When it comes to surgery options you'll face most of the doctors offering laparoscopy with laser (heated devices). This part, my friends, is to me the most important part of the book. I would have no clue about questioning the surgery techniques. Why would I, right? Doctors would know the best. Hmm, read what it does to you when a heated device touched our organs and the endometrial scar tissue. If you can, watch the videos of Dr. Se�kin; in medical conferences he explains why cold scissors are used v.s. high energy devices (i.e. laser).
Bottom line is, what I leaned from this book came with a timely manner. I didn't think I may need a surgery within a year but I'm now in a month away. If you can go visit Dr. Se�kin in his downtown NY office.

Amazing Book - a must read for anyone affected by endometriosis

Finally a compassionate and understanding doctor who truly understands the depth of endometriosis. My daughter and I purchased this book after reading about Dr. Seckin and the Endometriosis Foundation. I quite literally could not put the book down because I felt like I was reading about my daughter who has been suffering with endometriosis for 2 years and getting little guidance from her doctors. Every gynecologist should read this book to truly understand their patients. My daughter just had surgery with Dr. Seckin and is already seeing positive changes. Finally light at the end of a very long tunnel. His expertise in this area is second to none. If you have or suspect you have endometriosis, this book is a must read!

Best book out there on Endometriosis for Patients and the Family & Friends who love them

I have been to numerous physicians who misdiagnosed me, who did not know the best treatments, or who performed surgery on me that did use the gold standard techniques to remove the disease. Dr. Seckin openly shares there are not enough medical experts in the field, and not enough research. He helps guide you through questions you must ask during your appointments. The patient stories shared and the symptoms discussed will resonate with you. You will feel less alone. This book has the best diagrams and photos of endometriosis I have ever seen. Its great to help family and friends understand the disease. I hope this book helps other women get the right treatment from the onset.

Great history of the world

The most well-balanced presentation of history so far.

This is the most balanced point-of-view of world history that I have ever seen.

While published in the United States, it maintains a politically-neutral point of view throughout, exalting each nation in its own era of achievement--from Ancient Egypt to the British Empire--each for its own great accomplishments and cultural contributions.

While other books may easily overlook the events of lesser-developed nations, this one goes to great lengths to address them and to require the student-reader to learn them. The questions for review, presented at the end of each chapter are very helpful to the student and also to the casual reader that may wish to quiz himself on what he has just read.

Having read the other reviews of this book, on Amazon, from some of the two or three customers who bought the book but did not have quite the emotional stability or intellectual depth necessary to digest and appreciate content written at the ninth-grade-level--paticularly if it was being "force-fed" to them in a classroom setting somewhere--I think it will be necessary below to explain for the sake of other online readers, some of the subtle, additional benefits of this book that such people would certainly never catch, not even after reading this review; but would probably rather end up tossing it onto the coffee table and having a chuckle each time they tried to remember what the book was about.

The book does not ignore spiritual issues, for one thing. At the same time, it never emphasizes them, reading much like any other secular textbook from the early 20th century. (I can say this, because I have read about seven such books during the past year alone). This book does even better than those, however, by occasionally mentioning the religious achievements of certain individuals whose accomplishments often affected political and cultural developments, which, in turn, affected historical developments (e.g., the exploits of certain highly-influential missionaries such as David Livingstone). Inferior textbooks might easily ignore spiritual issues and religious figures altogether in a vain, "politically-correct" attempt to pretend that world events were rarely ever shaped by them (although one such individual, in particular, certainly even succeeded in separating the B.C. from the A.D. on our Western calendar). This history book is balanced in its presentation, and takes all factors into consideration--not just the most popular ones.

Speaking of which, this book is better than traditional textbooks, in that it sometimes takes into account the roles that morality, itself, may have played as a reason for which nations and monarchs have sometimes gained the trust of foreign investors. An example given is how the United Kingdom, influenced by the Wesleyan revivals and simultaneously, by the upright character of the reigning Queen Victoria, ended up becoming the banking capital of the world. One does not see that sort of insight in other textbooks, which typically attribute historic developements to political decisions, to the charisma of world leaders, or to chance alone.

I was particularly impressed with the fair and kind treatment that this book gave to other religious points of view and to other cultures, and with its readiness to give credit to the achievements of any nation, regardless of its religious heritage. In fact, the book reads like any other secular textbook, in general, so the reader easily forgets that he is reading a work written by honest men, purged of political correctness, in which truth has apparently not been sacrificed for the sake of sales.

I was impressed with the book's accuracy, down to the most minute detail, especialy in its side-articles on the cultural or linguistic background of the peoples addressed, which, in some cases, I knew to be true based on my own linguistic studies and my brief experiences of living in the Orient.

In conclusion, there are many advantages to using this textbook as a basis upon which to build a greater knowledge of world history. While they may all be irrelevant to simpler-minded college-students whose only ambition in life is to graduate, as soon as possible, buy a better skateboard, shack up with the blue-haired piercing-queen down the street, and to vent their frustrations to the world by means of silly online book reviews, to the rest of us they are great selling-points, not to be ignored.

In fact, I am no longer a high-school student, myself, but am reading this book for pleasure and to refresh my knowledge of history, surprised to find important details in this book that my other history books failed to include.

This book is, then, good reading for adults as well as for teenagers, provided that the reader is not looking for entertainment, but is rather interested in learning. Unlike textbooks made for children, which often embellish the events of history with improvised details, narratives and dialog, this one is straight-forward. No cartoons, multimedia, or cut-outs, for the average college-student readers or home-school drop-outs, but plenty of photographs, diagrams, timelines, and illustrations, for everyone else. The book is not just good for reading, but great for reference, as well.

Great book. I loved having a christian perspective while I was in a class with a teacher who openly denounced the bible. It was great even just for looking up terms and i would recommend this to anyone seeking a christian outlook on world history.
