Great scholarly review of the subject.

If you need a basic review of the beliefs and practices surrounding magic and its use in late antiquity through the witch hysteria of the 17th century, buy this book. It is well-written, fascinating, covers ground not dug up elsewhere, and will lead you to explore the subject further on your own (a hallmark of a great book, I think).

Don't be fooled by the short length

I will admit to being somewhat disappointed when this book arrived and it was as small as it was. A mere 200 pages of text plus a bibliography isn't much space to address a complex subject such as this. Also as someone who is relatively familiar with a lot of the source material he describes, I figured it would be at best a very simple overview. I was wrong.

This is one of the most accessible yet informative books I have come across on the subject. In many ways it is more informative than many other books in my library of greater length. The author engages in a brief but comprehensive survey of the major influences of medieval magic and discusses their origins and roots. Continuity with pagan sources (both classical and Northern European) takes up more than quarter of the book, and in that area he discusses sources ranging from Pliny the Elder to the Norse Sagas, from defixions (cursing tablets) to runic amulets.

The rest of the book is devoted to the Arabic influences, to the rise of demonology in the Middle Ages, and to patterns of persecution. While the Arabic section is fairly standard in approach and thesis, the chapter on demonology offers refreshing and unique insights into the rise of this ritual form in the Middle Ages. The chapter on legal prohibitions and persecutions attempts to tie the main theses of the book together.

All in all, this is a book I'd highly recommend reading to anyone interested in the development of medieval magical practices.

Short and Sweet

Great book. It's a "must own" for anyone who is serious about the true history of witchcraft and demonology. If you're looking for a "how to" book, look someplace else. This was one of the main required texts for a course I took at SBC, "The Medieval Other". It looks at witchcraft, demonology, the Catholic Church, and outside influences. Kieckhefer is a great author, and while I don't entirely agree with some of his theories, he IS a pioneer in the historical study of witchcraft. My professor had the good fortune of being acquainted with Kieckhefer-One of the main reasons we used the book for the class. But his book is highly readable, packed full of information. A great book for both the undergrad audience, or just for fun. It does assume you have a little background knowledge of the subject, but it's still very easy to read and anyone with interest in the subject will be able to follow it. Simply put, you must own this book if you're a history nut. Read it, keep it on your shelf. It will be your friend. I bought mine for school, but I will never sell it now that I know what a great book it is.

Paradox and Counterparadox introduces the English-speaking public to the first results of a research plan drawn up my the Milan Center for Family Studies at the end of 1971 and put into practice at the beginning of 1972. The book reports the therapeutic work carried out by the authors with fifteen families, five with children presenting serious psychotic disturbances, and ten with young adults diagnosed as schizophrenics in acute phase.

Though accepting the Bleulerian term schizophrenia, by now in general use, the authors have used it to indicate not the sickness of an individual–as in the traditional medical model–but a peculiar pattern of communication inseparable from the other patterns of communication observable in the natural group (in this case, the family) in which it manifests itself.

Starting from the position that modern sciences concerned with communication emphasize the central role of paradox as the source of paralyzing disturbances as well as of creative transformations, the authors demonstrate that it is possible to intervene in a family in schizophrenic transaction by devising original and paradoxical methods in order to release the action-pattern from disturbance to transformation. The counterparadoxes generated in this process, illustrated through a great number of examples, are rigorously analyzed in accordance with the conceptual models provided by general systems theory, by cybernetics, and by the pragmatics of human communication.

The reader will recognize, in the cases presented, the stimulating originality and efficacy of this approach, one whose interest exceeds the purely clinical and which offers new points of departure for an ecologic vision of human relationships.

This book will make the brilliant work of Mara Selvini Palazzoli and her gifted team more widely known in this country. The internal consistency of their approach–combining a systemic theory of family with a systemic theory of change–results in a therapy that is elegant, powerful, and economic. Using their knowledge of families as natural, rule-governed systems, the team proposes a hypothesis to explain the function of a problem in the family. They then base an intervention–paradoxical or otherwise–upon this hypothesis. The intervention serves to validate (or disprove) the hypothesis and to suggest further moves. The moves themselves are astoundingly compact. Palazzoli and her team are masters of the art of co-opting the resistance. They use the forces deployed by the family against change to produce change. It is as if one were to use the rules of Alice's Looking-Glass Kingdom to break the looking-glass. After the solemnity which surrounds the practice of the therapeutic art in this country, it is refreshing to find a practice which relies upon drama, wit, surprise, and (of course!) paradox. This book is one of the first, and certainly the most comprehensive, works on the subject of facilitation and is an invaluable resource for me in my development as a facilitator. The concepts in this book are a playbook for effectively guiding groups through meaningful dialogue and I know that I'll return to it time and again throughout my career. I highly recommend this book to all social justice facilitators, educators, social workers, HR directors, or anyone who engages groups of people in meaning-making conversations.

A straightforward and indispensable guidebook for practice

I currently work in higher education and have spent a lot of time on both sides of the facilitation table (both as a facilitator and participant). What I appreciate about Unlocking the Magic of Facilitation is how intelligently it is broken up in to concepts, and then how well these concepts are explained (pay special attention to the footnotes - they're a treat). I also find it to be valuable to have a lot of the facilitation "best practices" I have learned over the years in a short book that is not only easy to read, but also easy to understand and utilize in my work (thanks to the numerous, well-written examples). While Sam and Meg focus a lot of social justice facilitation, the practices are truly applicable to all types of workshop, seminar, presentation, and discussion facilitation. I've only had the book for a week, and I'm already using it to brainstorm effective discussion questions to use with my RA team for an upcoming team building activity. I believe that anyone could learn something about facilitation from this book, no matter if they have never facilitated a workshop before or if they are facilitating their 1000th. I expect this book to become a permanent part of my library as I continue through my career path as an educator.

If you like great painting and great design - buy

Here is an incredible painter I knew nothing about before this book. As an introduction, its very much worth the price. If you like painting with great color-sense, design and paint application, get it.

Amazing painter represented in an excellent book/catalogue

Spanish artist Antonio Lopez Garcia gets his due in this excellent art book/catalogue that accompanied a far-ranging exhibit of his work at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 2008. There are 160 pages of well-chosen examples of his drawings, paintings and sculpture in this book. The color illustrations are very well done.

Lopez Garcia is known as a realist painter, but he has dabbled with surrealism, pre-Raphaelite/symbolism and modernist themes. His monumental cityscapes are wonderfully evocative, but his intimate interiors are just as interesting and beautiful.

A terrific artist who deserves more exposure in the U.S. This book helps that cause and should be any serious art book collection.

A nice review of a first rate realist painter

This is a catalog of the retrospective works of a little known but highly respected Spanish realist who has had very few shows here in the US. It gives a reasonable sampleof his progression from the paintings of the 1950's wherein his early involvement with a proto surrealism quickly evolved into an intense, almost clinical realism and an incredibleUnderground Together: The Art and Life of Harvey Dinnerstein recording of his immediate domestic world and of the city of Madrid The reproductions are vivid and sensitive to the subtleties of Lopez Garcia's palette. though to quibble, are not nearly inclusive enough of the work in the Boston Museums show. Indeed there are some needless duplications. But on balance a very nice little volume , well written for a change in art books, andThe Art Of Velasquez.The Intimate Eye: The Drawings of Burton Silverman a solid introduction to his work at a fair price
