Jeannette Favrot Peterson is Professor of Art and Architectural History at the University of California at Santa Barbara. She is the author of The Paradise Garden Murals of Malinalco: Utopia and Empire in Sixteenth-Century Mexico, which won the College Art Association’s Charles Rufus Morey Book Award, and coeditor of Seeing across Cultures in the Early Modern World.

This is a remarkable book. A real academic coup de force. The text
is fascinating, about the black madonna image, its meaning and origins,
and the illustrations are lovely. Jeanette Peterson is a respected art
historian and this work will surely merit her only more kudos.

This a very beautiful and wonderfully detailed volume

This a very beautiful and wonderfully detailed volume, but it elects not to acknowledge anything in support of the tilma image's acheiropoietic origins. Philip Serna Callahan's infra-red evaluation is dismissed in one sentence. Professor Petersen questions a statement in his monograph in which he writes that the mantle's color appears to be tempera, but also has the transparency of watercolor. She decides this is simple double-talk, even though it was just part of many findings which led to his summation that the Virgin's blue mantle color and condition are inexplicable. There's also no mention of the mid-1990s unearthing of the Codex Escalada or Ernest Burris' technical analysis of the mid-16th-century copy of the Nican Mopohua, found in the New York Public Library. The author's point of view is clear and she's welcome to it, but the work feels incomplete because of it. She is focused on proving how Juan Diego and his image evolved into a 17th-century miracle-mill, but this Guadalupe conspiracy theory never really rings true.

Exploring fundamental modes of relating to the Other--among them violence, entreaty, demand, appeal, refusal, and revolt--he articulates the necessary transition from individualism to historical consciousness. This work thus forms an important bridge between the early existentialist Sartre and the later Marxist social thinker of the Critique of Dialectical Reason. The Notebooks themselves are complemented here by two additional essays, one on "the good and subjectivity," the other on the oppression of blacks in the United States.

With publication of David Pellauer's lucid translation, English-speaking readers will be able to appreciate this important contribution to moral philosophy and the history of ethics.

Written in 1947-1948, this unfinished treatise is Sartre's sketch for a revolutionary socialist ethics, and as such serves as a bridge between the existentialism of Being and Nothingness and the Marxist social thought of his later years. Sartre locates the roots of oppression in ignorance, stupidity, bad faith and mystification. He searchingly analyzes the oppression of women, children, slaves and, in an appendix, American blacks. He scathingly criticizes Frederick Engels, who, in his reading, absolved the oppressor of conscious responsibility by explaining oppression solely in terms of the interplay of economic forces. Deeming alienation to be a virtually inescapable condition, Sartre outlines a dialectics of choice and freedom in the spheres of work, religion and history. These lucidly translated posthumous notebooks contain a wealth of material on such topics as rights, violence, art, generosity, gift-giving, resignation and desire.

Philosopher, playwright, novelist, and correspondent, Sartre produced much during his working life that relied upon an ethical stance. During 1947 and 1948, he began to address the issue of formal ethics directly; the result of these initial but aborted efforts is this compendium of notes on the matter. Edited for publication in France in 1983 by his adopted daughter, Arlette Elkaim-Sartre, and smoothly translated here, Sartre's notebooks are clearly that: notes in need of reworking, expansion, reconsideration, and formalization. However, they are of great value to dedicated readers of Sartre, not only for their content but also because their raw state gives insight onto his formulating processes. The inclusion of two nearly finished essays, "The Good and Subjectivity" and "The Oppression of Blacks in the United States," serves to give the reader a sense of completion. For informed readers.

An Existentialist Ethics?

This is an excellent translation of a long, extremely important - though fragmentary - text by Sartre, posthumously-published and still quite seriously neglected. It is well-known that, in Being and Nothingness, Sartre promised to publish a treatise on ethics, the implication being that it would be based on the ontology of that work. Notebooks for an Ethics shows him struggling to fulfil that promise, but ultimately failing as his basic perspective changes. It is indispensable reading for anyone having, or seeking, a view on whether it is possible to build an ethics upon the foundations of Sartre's early existentialism.

About the Author

James Morwood was elected to a Fellowship at Wadham College in 1966, where he taught and served as Dean of Degrees, Steward of Common Room, and Dean (the last post from 2000 to 2006). He became an Emeritus Fellow in 2006 and remains Editor of the Wadham Gazette. He still does some teaching at the college.
James was educated at Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he sat Part I of the Classical Tripos and Part II of the English Tripos. After a year at Merton College, Oxford on the course for the Diploma of Education, he went to Harrow School in September 1966 to teach Classics and English. He spent 30 years at Harrow, the last seventeen of them as Head of Classics. He was deeply involved in school journalism and drama, working with Richard Curtis and Ben Cumberbatch among many others. He was librarian for more than eleven years, and sat on and later chaired the school's Treasures Committee, a body which brought into existence the Old Speech Room Gallery.

In 1996 he moved to Oxford University and took up the post of Grocyn Lecturer in the Classics Faculty and served for a year as President of the Oxford Philological Society.

James has been a committed member of the Joint Association of Classical teachers and held the Presidency of the Association for 1999-2001, becoming an Honorary Member in 2011. He was President of the London Association of Classical Teachers for 1995-6; has been a regular tutor at the JACT Greek Summer School at Cheltenham and Bryanston since 1970, serving as its Director of Studies, and its Director. He also teaches Classics and English literature at the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education.

With Eric Dugdale, he is currently editing a new series entitiled 'Greece and Rome: Texts and Contexts'. His revision of the Oxford Latin Course for North American college students was published in January 2012; his book on Hadrian (Bloomsbury) was published in the summer 2013.

Current projects include an edition of Virgil, Aeneid 3 (with Stephen Heyworth), an edition (with Chris Collard) of Euripedes' Iphegenia at Aulis and A Little Greek Reader (with Stephen Anderson-Oxford University Press). He lectures on cruises in the Adriatic and Agean, last September sailing from Istanbul to Athens.

Finally some use for astrology!

If you're someone who thinks astrology is fun and interesting but never quite knew what to do with it, this book is for you. Terry Marlowe teaches you how to manipulate others through astrology - but in a nice way and often hysterically. She breaks down the signs into characteristics and explains how to get what you want from your spouse, boss, significant other, friend and more. You'll finally understand what all the fuss is about when it comes to astrology and have a lot of fun! Plus you can't beat the satisfaction of getting those in your life to do what you want - of course it's all in their best interests:)

Astrologically incorrect

As someone who is not only astrologically challenged but, skeptical as well, I was a bit leery when I first picked up the book. Then.....I started to read and was hilariously surprised. What a gem. Terry Marlowe not only hits the nail on the proverbial head, but does so with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. You truly can use this book to get anything you want, as the cover implies, when you want it. Once you stop laughing. Oh yeah.....my wife loved the book too and now has all the ammunition necessary to get anything she wants.......from me.

I would compare this book to the best astrology book ever written, Linda Goodman's Sun Signs. This is an easy read, very interesting, and accurate. I have gone through many astrology books and came away with a wasted feeling, like I was given the run-around. Not here. There is actually something new to be learned in "Astrologically Incorrect" and it is highly recommended. Very insightful to use on other people as well. It sure saved me from a lot of mistakes!

Great Overview and insight into the acting technique of Michael Chekhov

I am reading a lot of different books on Michael Chekhov at the moment and I find this book to make accessible some of the more esoteric ideas in Chekhov's work. Great book.

An interpretaton of Chekhov

Lenard states from the very beginning that the book is an attempt to show the way he understood the Chekhov's technique. This possibility remains open to anyone that approaches Chekhov. By assuming that Lenard has unlocked and illuminated the technique - as some reviewer stated - is to assume that the technique is occult and obscure and we need some guidance. The guidance in itself is already expressed in Chekhov's own work: "To the Actor" and anyone that works consciously on this book may realize that Lenard's work is unnecessary. Not because is redundant but because it is almost entirely a new technique.

Chekhov practiced Eurythmy for 30 years and was influenced by the work of R. Steiner -The founder of Anthroposophical Society. This influence, which is of an esoteric level, meaning that his spiritual path was related to this group, is clearly expressed in his work (Life body - Atmosphere and so on). Lenard overlooked this aspect and by doing so he failed to grasp Chekhov's technique as a whole. He interpreted it,and only partially, and the outcome of that interpretation is this book.

I would recommend two works by Rudolf Steiner, "Speech and Drama" and "Eurythmy", as strong complements to Chekhov's texts.If not as his foundation.
