Outdated text

This text is a classic and has been around a long time, however, it fails to reflect the current state of engineering graphics. A lot of the text covers the basics which is important in the understanding of drawings and documentation, but I don't know anyone who does board drafting anymore. Everything is done in SolidWorks, Pro-E or some other 3D modeling program and this book touches on it, but it is brief and not very infomative. With the technology we have today, this book should spend the second half getting students up to speed on creating models, drawings and assembly drawings in CAD programs rather than how things use to look drawn on paper.

This is an excellent college level text.I particularly like the detailed "real world" drafting problems for the students. Also it has a very good apppendix. It is comprehensive enough that we use it in three different courses here at Vincennes University.

A Solid Work

As much as I hate paying for textbooks, this is one of my favorite books. Although I'm still on the fence of the relevance of hand drafting in the modern days of AutoCAD/Solidworks, this book is a phenomenal resource. It really provides a great understanding of the art of drafting by hand, and helps to fill in the gaps as to the large array of tools available in the modern software. There is something to be said for having the skills and knowledge of drafting in the old days as well as having the know-how to develop your own sketches/drawings to a professional level.

This will be one of those textbooks that I keep after I have used it in class. I think it will be a great reference/manual for many years to come.

Crushing long entrenched assumptions

We like to simplify, boil down, find the single reason for something. Miroslav Hroch shows us that is not the way of the world, at least not of Europe. In particular, nationalism was not the powder keg that blew Europe into numerous countries. Nationalism could be either a contributor or a result of statehood, with large effect or none at all. Hroch is an anti-reductionist. He delves into every conceivable aspect of nation building, from the invention of historical myths to national holidays and monuments, and demonstrates the effects with examples from numerous countries and communities at his fingertips. Some became independent states; many did not.

European Nations is part three of an inadvertent trilogy: one volume every 15 years. The first part came out in 1985; the second in 2000. This one is a tightly focused view from 50,000 feet up. The main point he returns to repeatedly is that any one factor is less impactful than we think. So, language is an obvious unifier and divider, but less than we assume. Modernization, the growth of government services and the consequent need for better educated workers, also contributes less than we assume. He even questions (with evidence) the prerequisite of literacy for nation building. Histories and myths were pulled together to unify the populace. The Church was the main means of transmission. But it was different in every case, as were the results.

There was a big change between proudly marching for your country and for your ruler. The idea of being country proud is not ancient; it is very recent. Your homeland tended to be your community within the realm, not the whole kingdom. As politics and social movements evolved, defenders of local homelands were reinvented as national heroic strugglers and nation builders. Failure was no barrier to national hero status. This sort of insight changes our perspective on probably most of the countries of Europe. Even Marx was too simplistic in his analysis by Hroch’s standards. Class struggle might have been a factor of greater or lesser import in some countries, but hardly all.

There is an entire chapter on definitions used by Hroch and his counterparts, whom he credits freely and criticizes as needed. The nuances of nationalism, national identity, national movement, nation, state-nation and nation-state give you idea of how granular this field has become.

There was nothing predestined or predictable about the outcome: whether an ethnic group became a country, if monarchies could merge into a country, how big or small a country would be. They were making it up as they went along. It was a bubbling cauldron of activity, and predicting where the next bubble would pop was foolish. Even hindsight is not obvious; it needs the reading of this book.

About the Author
Kathy Schwalbe, Ph.D., PMP, is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Business Administration at Augsburg College in Minneapolis, where she primarily taught courses in project management and problem solving for business. Kathy’s first job out of college was as a project manager/officer in the Air Force. She worked for 10 years in industry (Air Force, Boeing, and Clark Oil) before entering academia in 1991. Kathy is an active member of PMI. Kathy earned her Ph.D. in Higher Education at the University of Minnesota, her MBA at Northeastern University’s High Technology MBA program, and her B.S. in mathematics at the University of Notre Dame. She was named Educator of the Year in 2011 by the Association of Information Technology Professionals (AITP) Education Special Interest Group (EDSIG). Dan Furlong, PMP, FHIMSS, CPHIMS manages the Project Management Office for the Medical University of South Carolina and also teaches healthcare project management and healthcare technology in their Master in Health Administration program. Dan has served on advisory councils for multiple universities initiating or undergoing accreditation for project management programs. He has been an active member of the PMI Charleston chapter, serving on the board for the past ten years in a variety of roles including VP Professional Development, VP Marketing & Public Relations, VP Community Outreach, President, and Chairman. Would make an excellent textbook for a course on healthcare PM

• Complete textbook that would be a treat to teach from
• Superb references/multimedia links/applicable statistics and quotes
• Like the cartoons (although some were a little hard to read without my reading glasses)
• It's full of real-life examples/templates and top-notch charts & graphics
• Nice blend of covering all "traditional" PM concepts while making sure to discuss unique characteristics of the healthcare environment
• Shows a lot of hard work - just creating all the realistic documentation for the fictional VAPR project is impressive
• Overall fantastic ! Authors did a great job with an ambitious (and groundbreaking) objective

(Only drawback is it seems darned expensive for a relatively inexpensive paperback binding)

If you are looking for a healthcare project management textbook, this is the text for you. If you are familiar with other Schwable project management texts, the transition will be smooth. We are using the text to teach a healthcare project management course and the response from the students has been great. Very easy to understand, challenging enough (from a student perspective) and overall I highly recommend. Great text for a very important and growing field of opportunity.

About the Author
After initial studies of Mathematics and Physics with Astronomy at the Free University in Amsterdam (Kandidaats/B.Sc. in 1968), Johannes Bronkhorst took up the study of Sanskrit and Pali, first at the University of Rajasthan (Jaipur, India), then at the University of Pune (India). In Pune he obtained an M.A. in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1979. After his return to the Netherlands he obtained a second doctorate from the University of Leiden in 1980 (with the highest distinction). He remained attached to the University of Leiden as a researcher until 1987, in which year he was appointed full professor of Sanskrit and Indian Studies at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland). He remained at the University of Lausanne until his (mandatory) retirement in 2011. He has published more than one hundred and sixty research papers, all in specialized journals, more than fifteen books, besides numerous reviews. Becoming More Familiar with the Building Blocks of Buddhism

This book is a first rate study of the earliest structuring of the Buddha's teachings. This is a foundational book, but a scholarly work best approached with a basic understanding of Buddhism and Buddhist terminology. It discusses dharmas, the building blocks of Buddhism, the stages of meditation, the Jhanas as higher mental consciousness, the four noble truths, the importance of the concept of anatta or not self, and emptiness as developed through Theravadin and Mahayana teachings. It gives the reader the basic goals of understanding necessary along the path. And where does this path begin and end? "It is without origin and end, uncreated and unchanging, and has not entered existence at all. It is unthinkable, imponderable, immeasureable, unaccountable, and without equal......" at page 131. Reading this book over a period of a month, there were points where it was necessary to stop and re-read, reflect and meditate. When you decide you're serious and want to go beyond the many popular books now available on Buddhism you're ready to read and savor this book.

Vital context for Buddha's teaching

While much of the Buddha's teaching transcends specific cultures, there is a lot to be gained by the serious student through understanding the cultural context that nurtured the teachings we have received. It takes nothing away from the value of these teachings to know that complex cultural and philosophical currents have shaped the texts that have come down to us. In seeking the gnosis, or wordless knowing, that lies at the heart of these texts, understanding the philosophical history of India is crucial. Bronkhorst's book provides an excellent and reasonably concise primer on these subjects.

Clear and insightful

Perhaps the best introduction to Buddhist teachings. Bronkhorst is a great scholar and writes with great clarity. He really has a knack for presenting the most important parts of the teachings in a very insightful way. In only 60 pages he presents the Buddha’s original teachings with many excerpts from the suttas that makes the text really come alive. He is clear that the central teachings of the Buddha are the four noble truths (though this ‘title’ may be late) and the practices culminating in the four Jhanas. (Though sometimes he seems to forget this and states that the Buddha searched for liberation from rebirth, instead of from suffering.) He is also clear that the 12-link chain of Dependent Origination was not a part of the Buddha’s teaching, but is a later effort to unite the belief in some kind of liberating insight with the original teaching. The next part is a good overview of how the Abhidhamma came to be and how influential it became, especially the Sarvastavadins so-called ‘dharma theory’. The last chapter is a short overview of the ideas of early Mahayana.

What went wrong

This is a somewhat dated reflection on "what went wrong" during the financial crisis of 2008-2009. I found interesting what I guess was one of the first explanations of bad lending pracices, the cd scandal, and a general look into the complexity of Wall Street dealings, a brush-by only concerning the morality of same. Faber was once a big gun witht the TV financiall channels, but seems to have almost disappeared. This is his contribution to public understanding of big business and how it can go wrong,.

Superb financial detective work

David's book is an absolute must for anyone that wants to look beyond the headlines on the financial crisis. It is a concise and well explained dissection of the roots of the crisis and how it all unfolded. Combined with the personal stories of both minor and major actors as well as victims it is a stellar detective story of which one can only hope that one day someone will make a series for the tv. It will be as engaging as "24" or "Lost" but with a highly educative character and a very visible and audible alarm for anyone that thinks easy money is to be found in stuff they don't understand.
